GrocerKey operates as a white-label e-commerce software provider, equipping brick-and-mortar grocery retailers with the digital infrastructure to offer online shopping services. The company was founded in 2014 by Jeremy Neren and Daniel Glucksman in Madison, Wisconsin. Neren's venture into the grocery sector began much earlier; in 2005, after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in History, he founded Madtown Munchies, a grocery delivery service for college students. This decade-long experience in on-demand delivery provided the foundational knowledge for GrocerKey, which pivoted to a business-to-business software-as-a-service model.

The company's primary clients are independent and regional grocery chains across the United States and Canada that want to establish their own branded online presence as an alternative to relying on third-party marketplace platforms like Instacart. Its business model is based on licensing its technology to these retailers. For some clients, such as its first major partner Woodman's Markets, GrocerKey has also managed the in-store order fulfillment operations with its own W2 employees. The platform's features are comprehensive, including a customizable online storefront, real-time inventory management, order management for curbside pickup and delivery, integrated payments, customer analytics, and marketing tools. The software is designed to optimize the in-store picking process by generating the most efficient path through the store for employees fulfilling online orders.

GrocerKey's journey includes several significant milestones. In 2015, the company participated in the Gener8tor startup accelerator program and secured Wisconsin-based Woodman's Markets not only as a client but also as a lead investor. By 2020, the company was recognized on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies. A major turning point occurred in August 2021, when GrocerKey was acquired by Point Pickup Technologies, a last-mile delivery firm, for a reported $42 million. The acquisition aimed to create an end-to-end service, combining GrocerKey's e-commerce platform with Point Pickup's delivery network, allowing retailers to control the entire customer experience from online purchase to home delivery. Following the acquisition, Neren assumed the role of Executive Vice President of E-commerce Strategy at Point Pickup. In a subsequent development, after Point Pickup ceased operations, its assets were sold, and GrocerKey was acquired by e-commerce technology provider Wynshop in April 2024.
