GrocerApp operates as an on-demand grocery delivery service in Pakistan, positioning itself within the expansive e-commerce market. The company was established in 2016 by co-founders Ahmad Saeed (CEO), Hassaan Sadiq (CTO), and Rai Bilal (COO). The founding team brought significant experience from their previous roles at PakWheels, one of Pakistan's early tech successes, which they helped to scale significantly. Ahmad Saeed, an alumnus of the Lahore School of Economics, identified the market gap for a reliable online grocery service out of personal necessity. Rai Bilal also graduated from the Lahore School of Economics and holds a Master's degree in Supply Chain Management.
The business functions on a pure-play, fulfillment-led model, managing its own inventory and logistics to maintain control over product quality and pricing. This model was a strategic pivot in March 2019 from an initial marketplace approach, which proved challenging due to retailers' own inventory issues. Customers place orders through GrocerApp's mobile or web application, choosing from a wide assortment of groceries, fresh produce, meat, and personal care items. The orders are then picked and packed at dedicated fulfillment centers and delivered to the customer's doorstep on the same day via a network of freelance drivers. This integrated system is designed to offer competitive pricing and a broad selection, with over 4,000 SKUs available in Lahore.
Since its inception with an initial investment from the co-founders, GrocerApp has secured significant funding to fuel its expansion. Key milestones include a $1 million seed round in September 2020 and a $5.2 million Series A round in June 2021, bringing total funding to $6.7 million. These investments have enabled the company to expand its operations from its initial market in Lahore to other major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad. The company demonstrated substantial growth, reporting a 300% increase in orders and revenue in the nine months leading up to March 2021.
