Grit Systems, founded in 2015 by Ifedayo Oladapo in Lagos, Nigeria, emerged to address the country's significant power infrastructure challenges. Oladapo, with a background in developing embedded power-train systems, started the company to provide data-driven solutions for unreliable electricity access. The company's core offering was a web-enabled smart meter, the Grit Energy and Power Monitor (GEPM), designed to gather and analyze data on power consumption from various sources like the grid, generators, solar panels, and inverters.
The GEPM allowed users to quantify their power usage, which helped them make informed decisions to reduce costs and optimize energy from multiple sources. The system provided simplified summaries and visualizations of complex power supply mixes, accessible remotely. Initially, Grit Systems targeted the business sector, including hospitality, banking, and telecommunications, with plans to later expand to households. The business model focused on the sale and installation of these proprietary smart meters.
The company's journey began with a small team and rapidly developed its first prototype, which was demonstrated in 2014. In 2015, Grit Systems was accepted into CcHub's incubation program, securing seed funding of approximately $15,000 to $25,000. Despite being top-heavy with engineering talent, the company faced challenges in business development and navigating the difficult Nigerian electricity market. According to market intelligence, the company ceased operations around September 2021.
