Greenvironment Innovation & Marketing India (P) Ltd. operates as an environmental engineering company, targeting India's growing water crisis by offering smart technology solutions for water and wastewater management. Founded in August 2012 by Varun Sridharan and Sridharan Nair, the Chennai-based firm emerged from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras incubation ecosystem. Founder Varun Sridharan, a civil engineer with a specialization in water and environment, leveraged his prior experience on a decentralized wastewater management project with IIT Madras and as a process engineer in the Middle East to launch the company. He quit his job in Dubai, and with an initial investment of ₹5 lakh supported by his father and friends, established the company to address the market gap for sustainable conservation solutions.

Greenvironment's business model centers on providing end-to-end, Internet of Things (IoT) based solutions for water management. The company serves a diverse client base that includes manufacturing industries, IT parks, corporate houses, hotels, hospitals, and residential communities. Revenue is generated through a hybrid model, with approximately 60% from subscriptions and 40% from hardware and sensor sales. A key development was the 2016 introduction of a solution-as-a-service model, which removes the need for clients to make large capital investments in infrastructure. This subscription-based service starts from ₹15,000 per month.

The core of Greenvironment's offering is its Real-Time Monitoring (RTM) platform, which utilizes IoT, AI, and cloud-based analytics to manage water utilities. The company installs a network of smart sensors in facilities like sewage treatment plants (STPs), water treatment plants (WTPs), and effluent treatment units. These sensors collect and transmit real-time data on numerous parameters, including flow rate, pH, dissolved oxygen, and energy consumption, to a cloud analytics platform. This platform visualizes the data on a dashboard, enabling performance prediction, fault detection, and providing troubleshooting insights for operations teams. This allows clients to monitor treatment efficiency, understand water usage patterns, and receive automated alerts, facilitating quick and informed decision-making to optimize water use and ensure regulatory compliance.
