Green Plug Inc. was a developer of digital technology that enabled communication between electronic devices and their power sources to improve efficiency. Founded in 2006 by serial entrepreneur Frank Paniagua, Jr., the San Ramon, California-based company aimed to create a universal power adapter for consumer electronics, reducing electronic waste and eliminating phantom power loss.
The company's core technology, the Green Power Processor™ (GPP), was a programmable mixed-signal controller for AC-DC power converters. This technology allowed manufacturers to upgrade from traditional analog controllers to digital systems, which could negotiate power requirements with devices, thereby saving power and speeding up product development without increasing costs. Green Plug's business model was focused on licensing its intellectual property, including the GPP and its 'Greentalk' communications protocol, to power chip vendors and consumer electronics manufacturers.
The company gained recognition by winning top honors at the DEMO conference in 2008 and secured Series A, B, and C funding rounds with investors like Herald Ventures, Killik & Co., Peninsula Ventures, and Imagination Technologies. Despite its efforts and partnerships, Green Plug ceased operations, with its status listed as 'Out of Business' as of December 31, 2014.
