Green Motion SA was established in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2009 as a designer and producer of charging systems for electric vehicles. The company was founded by François Randin, who leveraged his background as a software specialist developing financial and risk analysis tools for banks and insurance companies. His venture into the electric vehicle market was sparked by the realization that the success of electric cars depended on a highly efficient charging network. The company began by developing its first prototype in collaboration with the Yverdon engineering school in 2009.
In March 2021, Green Motion was acquired by Eaton, a global power management company, becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary while its management team, led by Randin, remained in place. This acquisition was a strategic move for Eaton to enhance its electric vehicle charging infrastructure offerings. Prior to the acquisition, Green Motion had already established a significant footprint, signing a major technology licensing agreement in 2016 with the Chinese Zhongding Group to expand its network in China. The company also operated its own public charging network, "evpass," which became the largest in Switzerland. In February 2023, the evpass business was sold to Shell (Switzerland) AG.
Green Motion's business model encompasses both hardware and software solutions for the electric mobility market. The company designs and manufactures a comprehensive range of charging stations, including AC chargers for home and commercial buildings, as well as ultra-fast DC chargers. Its offerings serve various clients, from private individuals to public and commercial entities. Revenue is generated through the sale of this hardware and through its sophisticated software platform. This platform enables the centralized management of charging networks, providing features like station locators, real-time status updates, user identification, and payment systems. The company has pursued international expansion with projects in China, India, the United States, and Israel.
