Green Culture, Inc. is a Japanese food technology company established in February 2011 by Satoshi Kaneda. The founder's journey began during his studies in Silicon Valley, where he was inspired by the diversity of food options and resolved to popularize plant-based foods in Japan. Starting with personal savings of JPY 1 million, Kaneda, a Keio University economics graduate, initially focused on e-commerce, launching the plant-based food specialty mail-order site "Green's Vegetarian" on Rakuten in April 2011.
The company's business model encompasses a vertically integrated supply chain, including research and development, manufacturing, and sales of plant-based meat products. Revenue is generated through three primary channels: direct-to-consumer sales via its online store (now named Green Culture Online Store), B2B sales to businesses such as restaurants and food service companies, and the manufacturing and development of its own plant-based meat products. The company serves a range of clients from individual consumers to major corporations and even government entities like the Cabinet Office cafeteria.
A significant milestone was the 2021 development and launch of its proprietary plant-based meat, "Green Meat™," a soy protein-based mince product aimed at the foodservice channel. This product is central to the company's shift from a food distributor to a full-fledged food technology and manufacturing venture. Green Culture leverages data science by creating a database of raw material characteristics, enabling rapid product development that is responsive to market needs. In July 2021, the company secured JPY 250 million in a Series A funding round from investors including Kameda Seika, Oisix Ra Daichi, and Universal Materials Incubator to accelerate product development and expand sales in Japan and overseas markets like North America.
