Green Canopy is a vertically integrated real estate developer, general contractor, and fund manager focused on building sustainable, all-electric, and healthy homes. The company was co-founded in 2009 by Aaron Fairchild and Sam Lai, who shared a goal of making an environmental and social impact through home construction. Fairchild, a third-generation lender, and Lai, with a background in real estate appraisal and portfolio management, established the firm to address climate change and community sustainability. Andy Wolverton, a third-generation real estate manager, also joined as a co-founder.
The company operates in the Pacific Northwest, specifically in the urban infill communities of Seattle, Washington, and Portland, Oregon. Its business model involves a scalable platform for acquiring land, as well as buying, building, and selling environmentally friendly homes. In November 2021, Green Canopy merged with construction technology startup NODE to form Green Canopy NODE. This merger combined Green Canopy's development and construction expertise with NODE's technology, which includes manufacturing house assembly kits that are shipped flat-pack. The merger aimed to scale construction technology, lower building costs, and decarbonize the built environment.
Green Canopy NODE specializes in Net Zero Energy and Net Zero Ready homes, including rowhouses, townhomes, and accessory dwelling units (ADUs). The company's mission is to build homes and businesses that help regenerate communities and environments. They serve homebuyers and work with partners like Habitat for Humanity to provide affordable housing options. Revenue is generated through the development, construction, and sale of these residential properties, as well as through managing real estate investment funds. The firm has built over 250 green-certified homes since its inception.
