Green Canopy
Prefabricated building kits for sustainable, net-zero energy homes.
Green Canopy is a vertically integrated company focused on sustainable residential development, general contracting, and fund management in the Pacific Northwest. Established in 2009 by co-founders Aaron Fairchild and Sam Lai, the company was born from a shared goal of making a social and environmental impact through home construction. Based in Seattle and Portland, Green Canopy specializes in building net-zero energy, all-electric homes, including townhomes, cottages, and accessory dwelling units (ADUs), within urban infill communities.
In November 2021, Green Canopy merged with construction technology startup NODE to form Green Canopy NODE. This merger combined Green Canopy's real estate development and construction expertise with NODE's technology for creating prefabricated, software-guided assembly kits. The unified entity aims to address the housing crisis by making the construction of sustainable and healthy homes faster, more efficient, and less costly. The firm develops its own projects and offers development, design, and general contracting services to third-party developers and investors. Its business model also includes managing real estate funds for impact investors, having successfully managed over $70 million in assets across four funds.
The company's approach centers on creating high-performing, green-certified homes that increase housing density in walkable neighborhoods. A key innovation is the use of mass timber components manufactured off-site, which significantly reduces construction timelines and embodied carbon. This strategy allows for the assembly of a two-story home in just a couple of days, even under adverse weather conditions. Green Canopy has built over 300 homes and aims to scale its operations to become a leading builder of sustainable housing on the West Coast.
