Green and Seed is a South Korean agricultural technology firm addressing critical water usage and greenhouse gas emissions in conventional farming. The company was established in 2019 by Sung-jin Choe, who built upon a foundational technology developed by his parents. Coming from a multi-generational rice farming family and with expertise in CAD/CAM and bioplastics, Choe's parents invented Seed Film Cultivation (SFC) around 2010. The core of Green and Seed's offering is the Seed Film Cultivation (SFC) system, an approach designed to grow crops like rice and wheat in dry soil conditions, thus conserving water. This technology leverages film mulching drip irrigation (FMDI), where water is supplied directly to the plant's roots via drip irrigation, while a biodegradable film covering the soil minimizes evaporation. The film, made from PLA and PBAT resins, suppresses weed growth—the primary reason rice has traditionally been grown in flooded paddies—and biodegrades by 90% within 180 days. This process can reduce water consumption by 70-80%, nearly eliminate methane emissions, and increase crop yields by up to 20%.

The company's product line includes the 'Seed-attacher', a machine that affixes seeds to the biodegradable film to create a 'Seedfilm', and the 'Mulcher', equipment that lays the Seedfilm and installs drip irrigation tapes simultaneously. The business model operates primarily on a B2B and B2G (Business-to-Government) basis. Green and Seed sets up 'SFC Centers' equipped with Seed-attachers, where they sell the resulting Seedfilm to farmers and provide Mulchers for rent. This model is designed for scale, with one center capable of producing enough Seedfilm for 5,000 hectares annually.
