The story of Graphit Kropfmuehl begins long before its formal incorporation, with graphite mining in its home region of Bavaria dating back around 2,500 years. Industrial mining, however, kicked off in 1871, replacing smaller rural operations. The pivotal moment came in 1916 when Anna and Max Langheinrich, who had owned the Kropfmühl pit since 1908, founded Graphitwerk Kropfmühl AG, transitioning the operation from a local mining outfit to an industrial enterprise. The company grew, expanding its processing capabilities and looking beyond Germany for graphite sources, establishing ventures in places like Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. A significant step in its journey was the initial public offering in 1997, listing Graphit Kropfmühl AG on the stock exchange. A new chapter began in 2008 when AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group, a Dutch specialty metals company, acquired a majority stake in the company. This led to a full takeover, and by 2012, AMG completed a squeeze-out of the remaining minority shareholders, delisting Graphit Kropfmühl from the stock exchange and integrating it into its global operations. Most recently, in March 2025, AMG repurchased a 40% stake that had been owned by an affiliate of Alterna Capital Partners, consolidating its ownership once again. Today, as part of AMG, the company focuses on producing high-quality graphite for modern applications, including energy storage materials.
