GPMESS was a Spanish technology startup that developed a location-based messaging platform. The company, founded in Cantabria in 2012 by individuals including Javier López, operated with a core team that included Javi, Juan, Paula, Santi, David, Ángel, Lola, and Fran. Its journey began when Javier López presented a web client version at the Campus Party Europe in Berlin in August 2012. A significant milestone occurred in June 2013, when GPMESS was selected as one of 15 participants from over 4,200 projects for the first edition of Lanzadera, a business accelerator backed by Juan Roig. This led to the company's relocation to Valencia and provided the necessary support to advance the project. The first official Android app, developed by Santi, launched in August 2013.
The firm's core product was a free mobile application for Android and iOS that allowed users to leave geolocated digital messages, called "yipis," at physical locations. Anyone with the app who passed by that specific spot would automatically receive the message, creating a layer of user-generated information over the physical world. This service aimed to help people discover secrets, tips, and experiences shared by others, from finding pet-friendly establishments to locating open Wi-Fi spots or even discovering where movie scenes were filmed. The business model was centered on proximity-based advertising, where local businesses could notify nearby users of real-time offers, such as a bar announcing a freshly made dish. The company also explored revenue through promoted content like last-minute event and cultural information. Despite gaining a community of thousands of users and winning several awards, including the EmprendedorXXI and a prize at SIMO Network, the venture was short-lived. GPMESS ceased operations and entered liquidation in late 2014.
