The company was founded in 2017 by the husband-and-wife team, Ben and Ginny Eckblad. The founders' backgrounds provided a strong foundation for the venture; Ben Eckblad brought over two decades of experience in the commercial real estate sector, including roles at JLL and Cushman & Wakefield, while Ginny Eckblad's expertise was in global project scaling and people strategy from her time in the FinTech industry. The name "GorillaSpace" was inspired by a psychological experiment, signifying the company's goal to help clients see all available workspace options, even those they might not have initially considered.
The platform served a diverse client base, from startups to large corporations, by providing a comprehensive database of workspaces. Its listings included long-term office leases, flexible serviced offices, co-working spaces, and even converted shophouses. A key feature was the "Core and Flex" model, which allowed businesses to combine long-term leases with more agile, short-term options. GorillaSpace aimed to streamline the search process, claiming to reduce search times significantly through its proprietary GorillaMatch recommendation engine, verified listings, and the use of 360° virtual tours. The business model centered on creating an ecosystem for businesses, space operators, landlords, and brokers. For space providers, it offered a marketing channel to connect with qualified leads, while also enabling companies with underutilized space to market their surplus capacity.
GorillaSpace achieved several milestones, including its selection for the inaugural JLL and Lendlease property technology accelerator program in 2018. In May 2019, the company secured an undisclosed amount in a seed funding round led by Japanese real estate giant Mitsubishi Estate, marking the developer's first proptech investment outside of Japan. Other investors included Silversea Media Group. By early 2019, the platform had reportedly assisted over 1,000 businesses in finding workspace solutions. According to PitchBook data, the company is now out of business following a liquidation event in April 2022.
