Goal.com is an international digital football platform providing news, live scores, transfer rumors, and in-depth analysis. Founded in 1998 as a domain and fully launched in 2005 by Chicco Merighi and Gian Luigi Longinotti-Buitoni, the website has grown into one of the world's largest football content providers. Longinotti-Buitoni, known for his work as CEO of Ferrari North America, applied his marketing expertise to the media venture.
The platform has undergone several ownership changes. In 2011, Perform Group acquired Goal.com for £18 million from a group of investors, including Bessemer Venture Partners. Perform Group was later split, and Goal.com became part of DAZN Group. In 2020, a majority stake in Goal.com and other football portals was sold to Integrated Media Company (IMC), a media platform backed by private equity firm TPG Capital, in a deal valuing the assets at over $100 million. This transaction led to the formation of Footballco, which now manages Goal.com alongside other European football sites like Germany's Spox and the Netherlands' VoetbalZone. DAZN retained a significant minority share and a board seat in the new venture.
Goal.com operates in 18 languages across 38 global regions, with a network of over 500 contributors. The business model primarily relies on digital advertising, leveraging its large global audience of football fans to offer targeted media and content solutions for brands. The company provides comprehensive coverage of major leagues, clubs, and international competitions, catering to a worldwide audience. In addition to news and scores, Goal.com produces annual awards like the GOAL50, which ranks the best 50 male and female players of the season, and the NXGN list, which highlights the best young talents.
