GenCell Biosystems, established in Limerick, Ireland, in 2011, developed automated biological testing instruments for the life sciences market. The company was founded by Kieran Curran, who has a background in mechanical engineering and a PhD from the University of Limerick. His journey began at Stokes Bio, a university spin-out, which instilled in him a passion for developing new technology. After a period of running a service-based engineering consultancy, Curran pivoted to create proprietary technology, which led to the formation of GenCell Biosystems.
The firm's core intellectual property is its Composite Liquid Cell (CLC) technology. This patented platform performs biological chemistry within inert, "synthetic cells," a method designed to automate and miniaturize processes, reduce the risk of cross-contamination, and eliminate the need for plastic consumables. GenCell's instruments were engineered to deliver higher throughput and lower costs for researchers. The technology provided an all-in-one, automated workflow for complex applications such as library preparation for next-generation sequencing (NGS), high-throughput genotyping, DNA extraction, and live cell screening for compound testing. Its client base included biotech companies and university research laboratories.
The company's trajectory culminated in its acquisition by BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) on October 13, 2014. The acquisition was a strategic move for BD to enter the fast-growing next-generation sequencing market with a differentiated platform. At the time of the sale, GenCell had established headquarters and manufacturing in Limerick, along with a U.S. sales and service office in Madison, Wisconsin. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
