GamingMonk emerged in the Indian market as an e-commerce platform in November 2014, established by Amity University friends Ashwin Haryani and Abhay Sharma. Initially, the venture focused on selling gaming consoles, accessories, and titles, even offering a three-hour delivery service for major game launches to attract customers. Observing the burgeoning interest in competitive gaming, the founders pivoted the business towards esports, a strategic move to engage more deeply with the gaming community. By 2015, they began organizing offline console gaming tournaments in cities like Delhi and Bangalore.
This transition solidified in August 2017 with the launch of a subscription-based online esports portal. This platform enabled gamers across India to compete in tournaments for popular titles such as FIFA, DOTA 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive from their homes. The business operated on a dual model, managing both offline tournaments in various Indian cities and the online portal that served as a community hub for gamers. Revenue was generated through tournament registration fees, which varied depending on the event. The company also maintained an e-commerce arm, selling gaming hardware and software.
The founders' backgrounds complemented their venture; Haryani had prior entrepreneurial experience as the founder of CYBRICKS, while Sharma brought analytical skills from his time as an analyst at Airtel. Their shared passion for gaming drove the company's mission to build a comprehensive ecosystem for the Indian gaming community, encompassing competitive events, content, and social engagement. In April 2021, GamingMonk was acquired by the mobile gaming platform Mobile Premier League (MPL) for an undisclosed sum, a move intended to enhance MPL's esports and broadcasting capabilities. The entire GamingMonk team was absorbed into MPL as part of the acquisition.
