Founded in December 2003, GameDuell GmbH is a Berlin-based developer and publisher in the online gaming sector, specializing in casual and social games. The company was established by Kai Bolik, Michael Kalkowski, and Boris Wasmuth, who shared a passion for creating high-quality digital games. The founders brought complementary expertise to the venture; Bolik and Kalkowski focused on strategy and product development, while Wasmuth led marketing and sales efforts. Many of the founders, including Kalkowski and Wasmuth, had prior experience working together at the e-commerce company dooyoo.com, which they also co-founded.
GameDuell operates primarily in the cross-platform games community, offering a portfolio of over 70 casual online skill games, including titles like Fluffy, Bubble Speed, and Jungle Jewels, alongside classic card and board games. The company's business model caters to a global audience, with games available in seven languages across its own web portal, social networks, and mobile devices. Revenue is generated through a freemium model; players can join for free, but also have the option to become "money players" by depositing funds to compete in tournaments for real money prizes. This model proved successful, helping the company attract over 130 million users by 2016.
Over the years, GameDuell achieved several key milestones. In 2004, it secured its first funding round from investors including Holtzbrinck Ventures and Burda Digital Ventures, followed by a larger $17 million Series B round in 2008 led by Wellington Partners. This capital facilitated its expansion into North America with a San Francisco office in 2008 and its entry into social and mobile gaming with its first Facebook game in 2009 and iOS game in 2010. In February 2022, GameDuell was acquired by the Indian mobile gaming unicorn Mobile Premier League (MPL) for an undisclosed amount. This acquisition was a strategic move for MPL to expand its operations into Europe and enter the free-to-play (F2P) market. Following the acquisition, the founders stepped back, and the company is now managed by Dirk Potratz and Ankit Kashyap.
