Galaxy Resources Limited was an Australian-based lithium mining company established in 2005. The company's primary focus was on the exploration and production of lithium, a key component in batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Its operations spanned multiple continents, with key assets that included the Mt Cattlin spodumene project in Western Australia and the Sal de Vida lithium brine project in Argentina.
The Mt Cattlin project, which commenced production in 2017, was a significant source of spodumene concentrate, a raw material for lithium chemicals. This project served customers primarily in the Asian market. The Sal de Vida project in Argentina was positioned as a long-life, low-cost source of lithium carbonate, targeting the growing demand from the battery sector.
In a major strategic move, Galaxy Resources merged with Orocobre Limited in 2021 to form Allkem, creating one of the world's largest and most diversified lithium producers. This merger combined Galaxy's hard rock mining expertise with Orocobre's brine extraction capabilities. The transaction was structured as a scheme of arrangement where Orocobre acquired all Galaxy shares. The merged entity, Allkem, continued to advance the portfolio of projects previously held by the two separate companies.
