Futurism is a digital media company that provides news and analysis on scientific and technological breakthroughs. Founded by Alexander Klokus in 2014, the company originated as a science page on Reddit and has since grown into a significant media entity. Klokus, after attending an executive program at Singularity University, was inspired to create a platform dedicated to discussions about the future. Initially finding limited interest in his immediate social circles, he turned to the internet and started a subreddit called 'futurology', which laid the groundwork for Futurism.com.
The company's primary business is online publishing, targeting a global audience interested in the future of science and technology. Its content is designed to make complex topics accessible to a broad readership, avoiding overly technical jargon. The website is structured into three main verticals: 'The Latest' for feature stories, 'The Byte' for flash news digests, and 'Neoscope' for medical technology and science news. Revenue is generated primarily through advertising and to a lesser extent, affiliate marketing commissions from a non-news editorial team.
In March 2019, Singularity University acquired Futurism, aiming to leverage the media platform to reach a wider audience and offer branded content creation to its corporate clients. This acquisition included Futurism's media and editorial divisions, its creative services unit that produced custom digital assets for clients, and its film and studio arm which created short films and documentaries. A notable part of Futurism's history is the creation of the popular Gravity Blanket, which was part of its direct-to-consumer product company, Gravity Products; however, this entity was not part of the Singularity University acquisition and became a standalone business. In July 2021, Recurrent Ventures acquired Futurism from Singularity University, adding it to its portfolio of science and tech publications that includes Popular Science.
