FUSAR Technologies was a New Jersey-based startup focused on the connected mobility and wearable technology space, specifically for action sports. Founded in 2013 by childhood friends and enthusiasts Ryan Shearman (CEO), Clayton Patton (CFO), and Todd Rushing (Chief Designer), the company was born from Shearman's personal experience of being in a motorcycle accident. This event catalyzed the mission to create a unified technology platform to enhance safety and connectivity for riders. The firm began its journey in the TechLaunch accelerator program in New Jersey and secured early-stage funding from investors like the Jumpstart New Jersey Angel Network.
The company's business was centered on developing and selling a hardware and software ecosystem designed to turn any helmet into a smart helmet. Its target clients were participants in action sports such as motorcycling, cycling, and snowboarding. Revenue was generated through the direct-to-consumer sale of its hardware products, which were initially promoted through a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign that hit its $100,000 goal on the first day. The business model also anticipated potential recurring revenue through software subscriptions.
FUSAR's flagship product was the Mohawk, a modular, helmet-mounted device. This single unit integrated an action camera, GPS navigation, a communication system, an activity tracker, and a black box with an emergency response system. Key features included HD video and photo capture, with a "HotShot" function to save the last 15 seconds of footage even when not actively recording. A critical safety component was the automatic crash detection, which used built-in sensors like an accelerometer and gyroscope. Upon detecting a crash, the system would automatically alert pre-set emergency contacts via SMS and email with the user's precise GPS location and lock down the last two minutes of audio, video, and telemetry data as a black box record. The system also enabled group communication for up to 12 users and synced with a companion smartphone app for iOS and Android. After raising a total of $2.32M over several funding rounds, the company ultimately ceased operations around November 2018. Founder Ryan Shearman later went on to co-found Aether Diamonds and Loa Carbon, companies focused on creating carbon-negative diamonds and decarbonization solutions.
