Function Space operated as a social learning network targeting the gap between academic education and practical workplace requirements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The company was founded in December 2012 by Adit Gupta, Sakshi Majmudar, and Sumit Maniyar, who brought together their backgrounds in technology and design to create the platform. The initial idea stemmed from the founders' observation of a lack of online platforms for in-depth scientific discussion.
The Pune-based firm, formally Function Space Labs Pvt Ltd, secured an undisclosed amount in a seed funding round from Nexus Venture Partners on April 17, 2014. This investment was intended to help the company expand its content, develop more engaging tools, and grow its user and contributor base. Following the investment, Sandeep Singhal, Co-founder & MD of Nexus Venture Partners, was appointed to the company's board.
The platform provided an integrated ecosystem that included articles, video lectures, problem-solving exercises, discussions, and networking opportunities. It catered to a wide audience, from high school students and university undergraduates to researchers in corporate labs. The service was designed with features like markdown formatting, a diagramming tool, and a responsive interface to facilitate learning and collaboration in scientific fields. By 2014, the network had users from over 190 countries, including individuals from institutions like MIT, Stanford, and the Indian Institutes of Technology. Despite its initial growth and funding, PitchBook data indicates the company went out of business as of January 1, 2017.
