Fresh Energy positioned itself as a technology-centric energy firm focused on data analytics and design to enhance customer value. Founded in Berlin in 2017, the company developed a smart meter application that provided real-time visualization of power consumption.
The firm's core product was a hardware-agnostic, white-label software solution offered to utility providers. This platform utilized complex algorithms, pattern recognition, and machine learning to analyze smart meter data, allowing end-users to see their daily energy consumption and receive monthly cost analyses. The objective was to bring transparency to energy usage, empowering customers to reduce their consumption accordingly. Beyond consumption visualization, Fresh Energy developed additional value-added services based on user consent and digital meter data. These included features like the automatic reordering of consumables such as dishwasher tabs and support services for the elderly, known as Fresh Care. The business model focused on creating data insights to help energy companies improve user experience and customer lifetime value, generating additional revenue streams for the partner utility.
Fresh Energy's client base consisted of energy providers in the German market. The company listed Mark-E, Innogy, and the Stadtwerke Lüdenscheid as business partners. In December 2020, after a two-year pilot collaboration, the German energy supplier EWE acquired Fresh Energy in an asset deal. EWE integrated Fresh Energy's white-label service into its own digital offering, BEENERA, a smart-meter value-added app developed by its subsidiary, BEENIC. The acquisition was a strategic move for EWE to bolster its digital business models and enhance its customer-facing digital products. Following the acquisition, Fresh Energy's previous investors, including Future Energy Ventures (E.ON's venture capital platform), concluded their involvement. At the time of the deal, Fresh Energy had 15 employees and a reported annual turnover of 1.1 million euros in 2019.
