FreewayCamper operates as a digital platform for renting campervans and motorhomes, aiming to modernize the camping travel industry. The company was founded in Munich, Germany, in November 2019 by Julia Blum, Nikolai Voitiouk-Blum, and Maximilian Wagner. The founding idea emerged from the observation that the camping market had remained largely undigitalized, with cumbersome booking processes.
The founders brought diverse and relevant experience to the venture. Julia Blum had a decade of experience in e-commerce and product management. Nikolai Voitiouk-Blum spent over six years at Flixbus, where he was instrumental in scaling its operations and leading its business in the CEE region. Max Wagner's background is in customer data and centricity. This collective expertise shaped the company's strategy to create a seamless, digital-first customer experience.
The company's business model is centered on a digital booking platform that allows customers to rent a variety of fully equipped, modern campervans and motorhomes. In addition to its own fleet, FreewayCamper employs an asset-light, franchise-style partnership model, inspired by Flixbus. This allows existing medium-sized rental companies to use the FreewayCamper brand, platform, and marketing power to digitalize their offerings. Revenue is generated from the rental of its vehicles and through its partner network. The platform also facilitates the booking of nearly 1,000 campsites. After about eighteen months of use, the company also sells its campervans.
FreewayCamper has expanded its network across Germany and into other European countries including Italy, Poland, Austria, and Switzerland. In early 2024, FreewayCamper merged with its Czech counterpart, Campiri, to create a larger player in the Central and pan-European markets. Following the merger, Campiri's CEO, Lukáš Janoušek, became co-CEO of the combined entity alongside Nikolai Voitiouk-Blum. The company has secured significant funding, including a €30 million round in 2022 and a €4 million investment in late 2024 from backers like Rockaway Capital, Miton, and the founders of Flixbus. However, the company filed for preliminary insolvency in March 2025, with Lukáš Janoušek leading efforts to find a solution through restructuring or sale.
