Framebunker ApS was a mobile game development studio established in Copenhagen, Denmark, in May 2013. The company was founded by Nicholas Francis, a co-founder of Unity Technologies, and Charles Hinshaw, who was the former creative director at Unity. Francis departed from his role at Unity in February 2013 with the ambition of returning to direct game creation, a passion that led to the inception of Framebunker.
The studio's primary focus was on developing high-quality, memorable gaming experiences specifically for tablet devices. Framebunker's business model centered on creating and selling premium games, rather than adopting a free-to-play model. The company's inaugural and primary project was "Static Sky," a real-time, third-person tactical combat game set in a cyberpunk universe. The game aimed to blend the tactical planning elements of titles like *X-Com* with the action mechanics of *Diablo*, all presented within a neo-noir aesthetic inspired by films like *Bladerunner*. A distinctive feature of "Static Sky" was the ability for players to hack the game world, allowing them to manipulate the environment and game logic to their advantage.
Financially, Framebunker operated as a venture capital-backed private company. It secured a Series A funding round, raising a total of $1.15 million. In August 2019, THQ Nordic acquired Goodbye Kansas Game Invest, which held a 21% minority stake in Framebunker, thus indirectly bringing Framebunker into its investment portfolio. Despite its promising start and the development of "Static Sky," which was anticipated for an early 2014 release, the studio reportedly ceased operations around July 2015. Note that a different game with a similar title, "Static Sky: And Yet It █████," was released on Steam in 2025 by other developers and is not associated with Framebunker.
