Fos4X GmbH was a German technology firm specializing in fiber-optic sensing and data analytics, primarily for the wind energy sector. The company was established in Munich in 2010 as a spin-off from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) by a team that included Lars Hoffmann, Rolf Wojtech, Dr. Mathias Müller, and Dr. Thorbjörn Buck. Their foundation was rooted in research conducted since 2005 at TUM's Institute of Measurement Systems and Sensor Technology. Lars Hoffmann, with a background in Electrical Engineering from TUM and business administration, served as the CEO, driving the company's vision after a stint as a management consultant.
The core business of Fos4X revolved around the development and manufacturing of intelligent sensor solutions to optimize the performance and operation of wind turbines. The B2B-focused company designed fiber-optic sensors based on Fiber Bragg Grating technology, which are integrated into rotor blades to measure loads, vibrations, and bending moments in real-time. A key differentiator of their technology was its insensitivity to lightning strikes and electromagnetic interference, a common challenge for traditional electronic sensors in wind turbines. This enhanced reliability and longevity allowed for precise, continuous monitoring over a turbine's lifespan of more than 20 years. The collected data was processed by the company's edge computing software and proprietary algorithms, the "Blade Physics Library," which translated raw data into actionable insights for turbine control and maintenance.
This technology enabled wind farm operators to optimize power output, for instance, by safely managing operations during icy conditions, which could generate significant additional revenue per turbine. Beyond the wind sector, the company's solutions were also applied in electromobility, process measurement, and railway technology. Over its lifetime, Fos4X raised approximately $12.5 million in funding from investors including Equinor, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), and Bayern Kapital. In September 2020, Fos4X was acquired by the Danish company PolyTech, a global supplier for the wind industry. Following the acquisition, the Fos4X brand was discontinued, and its operations in Germany and China were integrated into PolyTech, with the Munich office becoming a center of excellence for fiber optic measurement technology.
