Foodily operated as a social networking service built upon a recipe search engine, positioning itself in the FoodTech and SaaS markets. The company was founded in 2009 by a team of former Yahoo! veterans and officially launched its web service on February 1, 2011.
The platform's core function was to allow users to search for, discover, and share recipes through social media channels and from various websites. It aggregated recipes and integrated with users' social networks, enabling them to see what their friends and trusted tastemakers were recommending. This social recommendation layer was designed to simplify the process of discovering new meals. The service expanded its reach in November 2011 with the introduction of a free iPhone application, making recipe discovery a mobile experience.
Foodily's business model was venture-backed, having secured a seed round of $180,000 in December 2009, followed by a Series A round in March 2013. The company's focus was on creating a comprehensive online social recipe network. In 2012, the platform gained recognition by winning a Webby Award for the best food and beverage website.
After several years of operation, Foodily was acquired by ASKfm, which was owned by IAC at the time, on May 1, 2015. Following the acquisition, the platform's functionality ceased, and the website now indicates that the system is unavailable.
