Flinc GmbH, established in Germany in 2010, originated as a dynamic ridesharing network. The company was founded by Dr. Klaus Dibbern, Michael Hübl, and Benjamin Kirschner. Flinc developed a platform that connected drivers and passengers for short- and medium-haul routes in real-time, functioning as a social mobility network that utilized desktop and smartphone technology to increase vehicle occupancy. The system distinguished itself from traditional carpooling by mediating journeys dynamically from door to door. Through its application, users could see other participants on an interactive map and arrange rides, with the platform integrating with navigation systems to suggest route modifications for pickups.
The company's initial business model was a business-to-consumer network for spontaneous ride-sharing. Over the years, Flinc secured funding from investors including Deutsche Bahn and GM Ventures. A significant milestone occurred in September 2017 when Daimler Mobility Services, a unit of Daimler AG (now Mercedes-Benz Group), fully acquired the company. This acquisition was part of Daimler's broader strategy to expand its portfolio of mobility services and transition from an automobile manufacturer to a mobility service provider. At the time of the acquisition, Flinc had approximately half a million registered customers.
Following the acquisition, Flinc's B2C service was discontinued at the beginning of 2019. The company then pivoted to a business-to-business model, re-launching in February 2019. The new focus is on providing a tailored ridesharing platform for employees of medium-to-large companies and business parks. This corporate solution allows companies to create their own mobility concepts, track CO2 savings from carpooling, and offer incentives like reserved parking to encourage employee participation. The platform helps businesses manage employee mobility and optimize parking space utilization. The founding team remained with the company post-acquisition to continue leading its operations.
