Based in Vienna, Austria, Flatout Technologies was established in 2013 by Daniel Marischka, Manuel Mager, and Kurt Reimann. The company operated in the smart home and Internet of Things (IoT) sectors, providing a cloud-based service for home automation and application deployment to business clients. Its core product was FlatOS, a smart home operating system designed to serve as a central hub for various connected devices, complemented by Flatcloud for remote access. The platform was engineered to manage a high volume of connections and data, offering flexibility through the use of various gateways to connect a wide array of devices.
Flatout Technologies' business model focused on providing white-labeled, end-to-end services, allowing clients to offer energy-efficient and secure smart home solutions under their own brand. The company also provided a documented application-programming interface (API) to encourage app developers to create new functionalities for connected devices. An example of this was using a motion sensor, typically for lighting, as a cost-effective security system. To facilitate customer adoption, Flatout offered the FlatStore, an online marketplace for smart home packages, devices, and app-based upgrades.
The company secured $1 million in a Seed funding round on August 18, 2014, with investors including Austria Wirtschaftsservice, VentureOut, and INiTS. It also participated in an accelerator/incubator program later that year. Despite its early-stage funding and product development, the company is now listed as out of business as of August 2019.
