Flatchat was a mobile-based application that connected people looking for flatmates by matching them based on their requirements and allowing them to chat. The company was founded in Bengaluru, India in 2013 by Gaurav Munjal and Aakrit Vaish. It pivoted from an earlier online listings platform named 'Flat.to' which was founded by Munjal. Gaurav Munjal, a computer engineering graduate from NMIMS University, had previously founded Unacademy as a YouTube channel and worked as a software developer. His co-founder on the later version of Flatchat was Hemesh Singh, who held the CTO position. Munjal and Singh would later go on to co-found the successful ed-tech platform Unacademy.
The Flatchat app aimed to solve the rental problem for bachelors and students by focusing on real-time communication between seekers, owners, and potential flatmates, rather than just listings. The platform was free to use, and it matched users who could then connect directly. Flatchat also offered a premium 'Flatchat Assistant' feature, a human assistant who provided a single point of contact for a user's requirements. The startup operated in cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Pune, Chennai, and Hyderabad. In June 2015, the company announced it had raised $2.5 million in a seed round from the real estate portal CommonFloor.com. By that time, it had reportedly surpassed 50,000 users and was seeing significant message exchange on its platform.
Flat.to, the predecessor to Flatchat, was acquired by Commonfloor in 2014. Subsequently, Commonfloor was acquired by Quikr. Following this acquisition, Flatchat's operations were shut down as its services overlapped with the real estate focus of its new parent company. The company is now considered deadpooled.
