In 1985, chemical industry veteran Robert Becker founded Fitz Chem with a straightforward motto: 'Grow through reputation.' The company was established as a specialty chemical distributor in Itasca, Illinois. It focused on providing products like additives, pigments, resins, and surfactants to the paint, coatings, plastics, and personal care industries. For over three decades, Fitz Chem built its business by focusing on customer service and technical solutions, growing to serve over 1,400 customers across 21 states. A significant chapter in the company's story unfolded in August 2017. Fitz Chem was acquired by Nagase America, the U.S. arm of the Japanese-based Nagase Group, a global chemical and technology innovator founded in 1832. At the time of the acquisition, Fitz Chem had annual revenues exceeding $60 million. Becker, who was the company's chairman, stated that finding a partner who would provide growth opportunities for employees and additional resources for customers was crucial. The deal allowed Fitz Chem to become a wholly owned subsidiary, initially continuing to operate under its own name. In 2020, it was fully integrated and rebranded as part of Nagase Specialty Materials.
