Featurespace is a developer of adaptive behavioral analytics software for enterprise fraud and financial crime prevention. The company originated in 2008 from the University of Cambridge’s Engineering Department, co-founded by Professor Bill Fitzgerald and his PhD student, Dave Excell. Their research into applied statistics and signal processing led to the creation of the company's core technology.
The company's central product is the ARIC™ Risk Hub, a real-time, machine learning software platform. This platform utilizes Adaptive Behavioral Analytics to monitor individual customer behavior across all channels, identifying anomalies and blocking new fraud attacks as they happen. By building and continuously updating individual behavioral profiles, the system can detect out-of-character actions and automatically evaluate risk in real-time. This approach is designed to reduce the number of legitimate transactions that are incorrectly declined, a common issue with traditional rules-based systems. The ARIC Risk Hub also provides solutions for Anti-Money Laundering (AML) by detecting suspicious activity with explainable anomaly detection.
Featurespace serves clients in the financial services, banking, payments, insurance, and gaming industries. Its customers include major global financial institutions, such as HSBC, NatWest, and TSYS. The business model primarily involves licensing its ARIC™ Risk Hub technology, which can be deployed on-premise or via a fully hosted cloud service. In December 2024, Visa acquired Featurespace to integrate its technology into Visa's global fraud prevention offerings. Following the acquisition, Martina King, who had been CEO for 12 years, announced her retirement and was succeeded by Jason Blackhurst.
