Founded in 2001 by Colin Farquhar, Exterity established itself as a provider of enterprise-grade IP video, digital signage, and guest experience technologies. Headquartered in Fife, Scotland, the company specialized in solutions that enable organizations to distribute television and video content over their existing IP networks. The firm catered to a diverse client base across sectors such as corporate, finance, education, hospitality, stadiums, healthcare, and government. Its business model revolved around providing end-to-end systems for capturing, managing, and delivering video content from any source to any connected device.
Exterity's product portfolio included hardware and software solutions that facilitate the delivery of live TV, video on demand, and digital signage. Key products comprised the AvediaServer for central management, AvediaStream TVgateways and encoders for content capture, and AvediaPlayer receivers for displaying content on various endpoints. The company also developed middleware like ArtioSign for digital signage and ArtioGuest for creating customized interactive portals, particularly for the hospitality sector. This integrated suite allowed clients to manage their entire video and digital signage system from a single platform. A significant milestone for Exterity was its acquisition by VITEC, a French video streaming solutions provider, in April 2021. This strategic move was intended to merge complementary technologies and strengthen the combined entity's market position, particularly in Europe, the Middle East, and the US. Following the acquisition, Exterity was officially rebranded as VITEC in February 2022, with former Exterity CEO Colin Farquhar becoming Senior Vice President of Sales at VITEC.
