Exclusively.in, founded in 2010 by the entrepreneurial duo Sunjay Guleria and Mohini Boparai-Guleria, carved a niche in the e-commerce landscape by targeting the global Indian diaspora with Indian-inspired lifestyle and fashion goods. The platform initially operated as a flash sales site, offering a curated selection of apparel, jewelry, and accessories to a customer base primarily in the United States, capitalizing on the high internet and credit card penetration in developed markets. The business model was centered on providing access to Indian ethnic wear and designer products that were otherwise difficult to obtain outside of India.
The company's journey involved several strategic shifts and ownership changes. After securing early-stage funding from investors like Accel Partners and Helion Venture Partners, Exclusively.in demonstrated significant growth potential. A notable milestone in its history was its acquisition by online fashion retailer Myntra in November 2012. However, this partnership was short-lived, as the founders, along with angel investors, bought the company back from Myntra in June 2013, citing differences in target market focus. Following the buyback, the company rebranded from Exclusively.in to Exclusively.com and shifted its focus towards becoming an online luxury mall for high-end fashion.
This strategic pivot culminated in its acquisition by online marketplace Snapdeal in February 2015 for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition was intended to bolster Snapdeal's fashion category and tap into India's burgeoning luxury market, which was estimated to be worth $14 billion and growing at 30% annually at the time. Post-acquisition, Exclusively.com continued to operate as an independent site, providing a platform for hundreds of leading Indian designers, including Manish Malhotra, Tarun Tahiliani, and Ritu Kumar. The goal was to combine Exclusively's fashion expertise with Snapdeal's extensive reach to cater to aspirational consumers across India. Ultimately, in August 2016, Snapdeal integrated Exclusively.com into its main platform, absorbing its catalog and team to streamline its fashion business.
