Epyon, a Dutch company founded in 2005 as a spin-off from Delft University of Technology by Crijn Bouman, was a pioneer in developing fast-charging solutions for electric vehicles. The company focused on creating intelligent charging stations that could fully charge an electric vehicle in 15 to 30 minutes, a significant reduction from the several hours required by standard chargers at the time. Its product line included multi-standard DC fast chargers compatible with CHAdeMO and later, Combined Charging System (CCS) standards, serving a wide range of electric vehicles.
The business model centered on the design, manufacturing, and sale of these advanced charging stations to various clients, including utility companies, service station operators, and fleet managers. Epyon's key innovation was its power electronics expertise, which allowed for the creation of compact, efficient, and robust fast-charging hardware. In May 2011, the global power and automation technology group ABB acquired Epyon to integrate its EV charging infrastructure portfolio. This acquisition marked a significant milestone, allowing ABB to absorb Epyon's technology and market position to become a major player in the global electric vehicle charging market. Following the acquisition, the Epyon brand was integrated into ABB's broader e-mobility division.
