Epistema Ltd., also known as Ment.io, was established in August 2015 by co-founders Joab Rosenberg (CEO), Dror Ben-Eliezer, Shlomo Kraus, and Tzvika Katzenelson. The Tel Aviv-based startup developed a platform to enhance organizational decision-making. Joab Rosenberg, a former high-ranking Israeli military intelligence officer and commander of the elite 'Talpiot' program, brought a background in human analysis to the company's approach.
The company's core offering was a structured debate and decision-making platform, initially named MENT, supported by artificial intelligence. This software-as-a-service (SaaS) product was designed to streamline the entire decision process, from posing a question and hosting a discussion to reaching a conclusion. The platform utilized a smart algorithm and scoring engine to moderate discussions, organize arguments, and highlight the leading choices, aiming to help teams make better and faster decisions. A key feature was its ability to analyze the reasoning behind opinions, which allowed management to identify the consensus among specific groups, like developers, and understand the urgency of certain issues.
Epistema targeted its services toward financial markets, technology companies, and government agencies, with initial pilots conducted with intelligence entities and financial institutions in Israel and the U.S. The business model focused on providing its AI-powered platform to organizations to improve internal consultations and strategic alignment. The company secured early-stage investments from PICO Venture Partners and Flint Capital, later attracting a significant funding round of around $6 million from investors including Peter Thiel's Mithril Capital Management, Slack Technologies Inc., and MizMaa Ventures. In April 2023, PitchBook listed the company as out of business.
