EON Protocol (EOT), founded in 2017 by Aron Lyu and Tao Hu, is a decentralized game distribution platform headquartered in Singapore. The project, also known as Entertainment Open Network Protocol, aims to provide developers with a protocol for creating and distributing decentralized games (dGames). The EON Foundation was established to build and promote the protocol.
The platform utilizes a layer 2 solution, which combines on-chain and off-chain architecture, to enable dGames to operate smoothly, similar to traditional web-hosted games. This infrastructure is designed to address performance issues like high transaction fees and low transaction speeds often associated with blockchain games. Key features include an in-game wallet SDK that supports multiple cryptocurrencies for payments and the exchange of digital assets as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). This system allows developers to integrate cryptocurrency payments and manage in-game assets more easily. The protocol is designed to be deployable on various public blockchains, such as Ethereum and EOS.
The business model seeks to reduce marketing and distribution costs for game developers by connecting them directly with gamers. It employs a referral system with smart contracts and token incentives to encourage players to promote games, creating a win-win scenario for both developers and gamers. The EOT token is central to the ecosystem, used for transactions, staking by developers, and as a reward mechanism. EOT raised $5 million in a seed funding round in June 2018 from investors including Cherubic Ventures, Feng Li, and Wei Guo. Before creating the protocol, the team developed CryptoAlpaca, a dGame that garnered over 200,000 registrations, which provided insights into the challenges of dGame development.
