Enstratius, initially named enStratus Networks, was established in 2008 as a specialist in cloud infrastructure management. The company originated as a spin-off from Valtira, a marketing software creator, leveraging the internal cloud management tools Valtira had developed for its own operations. Founded by David Bagley and George Reese, the firm was created to address the complex governance and management challenges associated with deploying systems across public, private, and hybrid cloud environments. George Reese's background in delivering software-as-a-service since 2003 and authoring books on cloud architecture provided a strong technical foundation, while David Bagley brought executive experience from roles at Valtira, Retek, and Accenture.
The company's core offering was a platform that enabled organizations to manage applications across various cloud infrastructures from a single point of control. This platform was cloud-agnostic, supporting over 20 different public and private clouds, including major players like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, OpenStack, and VMware. It provided tools for automated application provisioning, scaling, configuration management, and monitoring. Key features included a self-service catalog and design tools that allowed clients, primarily developers and IT operations teams, to deploy and manage multi-component applications. The business model was flexible, offering the platform as both a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution and as on-premises software for clients who required full control within their own data centers.
After publicly launching in 2009 and securing $4.5 million in a Series A funding round in 2011, Enstratius garnered significant attention in the cloud computing market. This culminated in its acquisition by Dell in May 2013 for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition was part of Dell's broader strategy to bolster its enterprise IT solutions and cloud management capabilities. Following the acquisition, Enstratius was integrated into Dell's software portfolio and became known as Dell Cloud Manager. By 2016, Dell transitioned the product line to support-only, ceasing new sales of the platform.
