ENSEK develops a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform for the energy retail sector, designed to facilitate digital transformation for energy suppliers. The company was founded in 2010 by Arran Stevenson and James Kirk, who identified significant revenue leakage issues within the energy industry. Initially focused on revenue assurance and gross margin accounting products, ENSEK has since expanded its offerings.
The company's core product is the Ignition platform, a cloud-native solution that manages the entire energy consumer lifecycle, from quotes and sign-ups to billing, collections, and customer service. Built on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and employing a microservices architecture, the platform offers tools for customer management, financial accounting, market communication, and business analytics. It aims to reduce operational costs for suppliers, enhance the customer experience, and support the transition to decentralised, decarbonised energy by connecting and managing smart devices.
Headquartered in Nottingham, UK, ENSEK serves energy suppliers for residential, SME, and industrial & commercial (I&C) segments. Its business model is subscription-based, providing its platform as a service to clients. In 2017, the private equity firm LDC backed a management buyout led by CEO Jon Slade to support product development and expansion. A significant milestone was a strategic partnership with Centrica in 2017, which led to the development of 'British Gas Lite' and later expanded to migrate over 7 million of Centrica's UK customers to the Ignition platform. ENSEK was ultimately acquired by Centrica in a deal that completed in September 2024. The company has also grown through acquisitions, including data analytics company NrgFin and AI-powered home energy management platform Zoa.
