ENGIE Energía Perú
Diversified power generation and transmission with renewable focus.
ENGIE Energía Perú, a subsidiary of the French multinational utility company ENGIE, is a major player in Peru's electricity sector, involved in both generation and transmission. Established in 1996 as Powerfin Perú S.A., the company has undergone several name changes, becoming Energía del Sur S.A. in 1997, EnerSur S.A. in 2007, and finally adopting its current name in 2016 to align with its parent group. With over 27 years in the market, the company operates 10 power plants across six regions of Peru, boasting an installed capacity of over 2,700 MW. The current CEO is El Mehdi Ben Maalla.
The company's business model focuses on a diversified portfolio of power generation technologies, including natural gas, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power. This diversification across geographic locations and energy sources is a key strategic element. ENGIE Energía Perú serves a range of clients, from large mining and industrial companies to the national grid, the Sistema Eléctrico Interconectado Nacional (SEIN). A significant part of its strategy is the transition towards a carbon-neutral economy, with a goal to have 40% of its generation from renewable sources by 2030 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2045. This includes the progressive replacement of conventional energy sources with renewables and the development of a project pipeline exceeding 1,600 MW.
Key assets in its portfolio include the ChilcaUno natural gas plant, the Punta Lomitas wind farm (296.4 MW), the Intipampa solar park (40 MW), and several hydroelectric plants. The company is actively expanding its renewable capacity, with projects like the Hanaqpampa and Ruphay solar projects and additional wind farm developments. To support this transition and the stability of the grid, ENGIE is also investing in battery energy storage systems (BESS). In August 2025, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) approved a corporate loan of up to US$600 million to support the development of these renewable energy projects.
