The Energy Competence Center (ECC) is a Greek technology cluster established to enhance innovation and technical expertise within the energy sector. It operates as a spin-off company and a public-private partnership, aiming to bridge the gap between academic research and industry application. The initiative was announced in July 2021 by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), who coordinate the center. The establishment was approved by the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI) and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The ECC's primary mission is to commercialize research and know-how from universities and public research organizations to support enterprises, particularly SMEs, in their technological and digital transformation. It focuses on promoting innovation, facilitating the exchange of knowledge, and developing networks between companies and research institutions. Key areas of activity include decarbonization, digitalization, circularity, smart cities, electromobility, and sustainable transportation. The center offers technology-intensive services such as pilot programs, demonstration installations, sustainability assessments, and specialized training to help businesses adopt high-value-added products and services.
The consortium includes twelve additional partners from higher education, research, and major corporations in the energy, environment, and economic sectors. Notable corporate partners include DEPA COMMERCIAL SA, Motor Oil Hellas Corinth Refineries SA, and MYTILINEOS SA. By focusing on future-oriented energy planning and large-scale research infrastructure, the ECC addresses the need for significant investments to tackle modern environmental challenges.
