Energryn, established in 2010 in Cancun, Mexico, operates as a renewable energy technology developer with a focus on democratizing access to clean energy for the base of the pyramid population. The company was founded by Andres Muñoz and Rassiel Lara, who left careers in the hotel industry to pursue this venture. The inspiration for the company's flagship product came from Muñoz's father, Andrés Muñoz Sr., a thermodynamics engineer who designed the initial prototype. This father-son collaboration was pivotal, with the elder Muñoz developing the core technology and his son, who had a background in IT, driving the business forward.
The company's primary business involves the manufacturing and sale of its patented hybrid solar-electric water heaters. Energryn's main product, initially called "Grynboiler" and later known as "Solesyto," is a distinctively spherical, all-in-one water heater. This design features an insulated 80-liter tank that directly heats the water using solar radiation, supplemented by an electric backup for overcast days. The product's key differentiators include its lightweight design (weighing only 8-11 kg), compact size, ease of installation, and affordability, specifically targeting a significant market in Mexico where over half the population lacks a water heater. Energryn's business model focuses on direct sales to end-customers, aiming to provide an affordable alternative to gas-based heaters, thereby reducing both household expenses and carbon emissions. Revenue is generated from the sale of these units.
After bootstrapping in its early years, Energryn secured a seed funding round of $1.2 million in 2018 from investors including Angel Ventures, Village Capital, and Alta Ventures. A key milestone was the shipment of its first commercial batch of water heaters in 2015 after years of product iteration. The company holds numerous patents for its technology and has been recognized with several awards, including the Innovation Prize from the Pacific Alliance. Energryn built its own production facility in Quintana Roo to control manufacturing and has since expanded its focus from residential units to larger-scale solutions for the hotel and industrial sectors, as well as developing new business lines like "GrynHouse sin Gas" for energy independence and "Nubesyta" for rainwater harvesting.
