The company was founded by a team with a background in online marketing and software development. Emediate's core business involved providing web publishers, agencies, and advertisers with a flexible banner system for managing online advertising, including display, mobile, and video ads. The company catered to a wide range of clients, from small web publishers to large media groups and advertising networks.

Cxense itself was founded in Oslo, Norway, in 2010 by John M. Lervik and John Sviland. Lervik previously co-founded Fast Search & Transfer (FAST), which was acquired by Microsoft, and he served as a Corporate Vice President at Microsoft before founding Cxense. Cxense developed an AI-powered data management and intelligent personalization platform. The platform provided real-time analytics, audience segmentation, and personalized content recommendations to help publishers and marketers increase user engagement and revenue. In October 2019, Cxense was acquired by Piano Software, a US-based company providing a platform for analytics, personalization, and subscription services. Following this acquisition, in 2017, Cxense divested Emediate to Adnuntius AS as part of a strategy to focus on its core DMP and personalization business.
