eFREIGHT 2030 is a consortium of fleet operators, vehicle manufacturers, data analytics companies, and energy providers collaborating to scale the electrification of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in the United Kingdom. Initiated by Voltempo in July 2022, the group is chaired by Sir Vince Cable, a former Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills. The consortium is a key part of the UK Government's Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) program, which aims to phase out non-zero emission HGVs by 2040.
The project received £49.2 million in UK government funding, which is expected to unlock an additional £500 million in private investment from consortium members by 2030. The business model centers on demonstrating the commercial and technical viability of electric trucks to accelerate industry-wide adoption. The initial phase involves deploying 100 electric HGV tractor units and establishing 32 megawatt-capable charging locations across the UK. This creates a charging network backbone to support fleets in transitioning to electric. To encourage wider participation, the consortium offers vehicles on a subscription basis through its partner Vertellus, allowing smaller operators to trial eHGVs with minimal risk.
Founding members include prominent logistics providers like Kuehne+Nagel, Wincanton, and Maritime Transport; vehicle manufacturers such as DAF Trucks, Renault Trucks, and Scania; and retailer Marks & Spencer. The project is led by Voltempo, a developer of megawatt charging systems for electric HGVs. Dynamon, another member, provides data and planning software to help operators optimize the use of both electric and diesel fleets.
