Edwards Engineering is a multi-disciplinary engineering firm providing structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering services. The company was founded in Perth, Scotland, in 1969 by Henry Edwards, who identified an opportunity in engineering services for grain handling and drying. By the late 1970s, the company had established itself in the agriculture market and began expanding its capabilities into structural steel and servicing the whisky distilling industry in the 1980s.
In August 2016, the founding family sold the business to Cartalex Limited, an investment group led by Ben Carter and David Alexander, created to acquire engineering firms in the UK. Ben Carter, the current Chief Executive, has a background in major project delivery and performance improvement for global companies such as Rio Tinto and Babcock International. David Alexander, a Director, is an experienced investor and operator of smaller businesses. Sandy Kirk serves as the Technical Director, with over 45 years of engineering experience, 40 of which have been with Edwards Engineering.
The company operates from a 45,000-square-foot facility in Perth and serves a UK-wide client base across various sectors, including food and drink, manufacturing, agriculture, distilling, structural steel, and infrastructure. Its business model focuses on delivering turnkey engineering projects, from design and fabrication to installation and commissioning. Revenue is generated on a project basis, with clients ranging from agricultural businesses like Alexander Harleys Seeds to major distilling and food brands such as Broxburn Bottlers and Muntons. The company has stated its growth strategy includes organic expansion and selective acquisitions of other engineering businesses.
