Edge Protocol operates as a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol, initially established as a money-market-as-a-service (MMaaS) provider on the Terra ecosystem. The company was founded to address challenges in the blockchain space, such as limited scalability, low throughput, and high energy consumption. One of the company's early significant milestones was securing $1.75 million in a seed funding round to develop its money market services. Edge Protocol was co-founded by Joseph Denne, Will Lebens, and Chris Mair. Denne and Lebens have a long professional history, having worked together for approximately 25 years since the dot-com boom in 1998, including at a digital agency they started called Airlock.
The protocol functions as a Layer 1 blockchain solution, designed to facilitate the development and deployment of decentralized applications (dApps). It utilizes a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, incorporating sharding to enhance throughput and reduce latency, which allows the network to be divided into smaller, parallel processing groups. The business model centers on providing a platform for creating customized liquidity pools and markets, which allows protocols and DAOs to generate revenue from their treasury assets without selling them. This is achieved by enabling users to create both public and private money markets with their own specified terms. The platform's native token, EDGE, is used for transactions, staking, and governance, operating on the Binance Smart Chain.
Edge Protocol offers a suite of products and services aimed at enhancing the utility of digital assets. Users can create customizable lending pools, enabling services like margin trading and leveraged yield farming without significant programming overhead. The platform provides tools for users to earn interest, borrow against assets, and engage in leveraged long and short positions. A key feature is the ability to list a wide range of assets, including long-tail and yield-bearing tokens, which might otherwise lack liquidity. For security and user control, the protocol offers a secure wallet for asset management and integrates advanced cryptographic techniques like zero-knowledge proofs. Additionally, Edge provides a bridge to other blockchains, facilitating asset transfers and interoperability within the broader DeFi ecosystem.
