Ecologic Brands, established in May 2008, operates in the sustainable packaging sector, specializing in the manufacturing of paper-based bottling solutions for consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies. The company was founded by Julie Corbett, whose background in economics and investment banking, with firms like RBC Dominion Securities and Jurika, Mills & Keifer, provided a foundation for identifying market opportunities. The inspiration for the company came from Corbett's personal desire to reduce household waste, which was sparked by her children's school waste-free lunch program and the Canadian milk pouch system. A key moment of inspiration occurred when she observed the molded fiber tray in her iPhone packaging, envisioning its potential for creating a structured bottle.
The company's core product is the eco.bottle®, a hybrid packaging solution that combines a rigid outer shell made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials, such as old corrugated cardboard and newspapers, with a thin, lightweight inner plastic liner. This design can reduce plastic usage by up to 70% compared to traditional rigid plastic containers. The outer shell is compostable and recyclable, while the inner liner, made of #2 or #4 BPA-free plastic, is also recyclable where facilities exist. The business model focuses on providing these packaging solutions to CPG brands looking to enhance their sustainability efforts. Ecologic Brands offers both stock containers in various sizes and custom solutions, supporting clients from concept and design to manufacturing. Revenue is generated through the sale of these packaging products to major brands, including L'Oréal and Seventh Generation.
Ecologic's commercial debut was in January 2010 through a partnership with Straus Family Creamery for a market test at Whole Foods, which resulted in a significant sales lift for the product. A subsequent major milestone was the 2011 launch of a laundry detergent bottle for Seventh Generation, which brought widespread attention to the company. In January 2021, Ecologic Brands was acquired by Jabil Inc., a global manufacturing solutions provider. This acquisition integrated Ecologic's Manteca, California operation into Jabil's Packaging Solutions division, providing the scale and manufacturing expertise to expand the reach of its paper bottle technology globally. The Ecologic name continues as a product platform within Jabil.
