Founded in 1961 as the Electronics Corporation of Israel, the company initially focused on manufacturing electronic equipment for the Israeli military. The firm, which specialized in telephone transmission products, shifted its focus to civilian applications in the 1970s. In 1981, the company became ECI Telecom and went public on the NASDAQ exchange the following year. Throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, ECI established itself as a key provider of telecommunications equipment. A significant turning point came in 2007 when the Swarth Group, led by investor Shaul Shani, and private equity firm Ashmore Group acquired ECI for approximately $1.2 billion, taking the company private after 25 years on the public market. After more than a decade under private ownership, another major event reshaped the company's trajectory. In November 2019, US-based Ribbon Communications announced it would acquire ECI. The deal, which positioned the combined entity to target the emerging 5G market, was valued at approximately $486 million in cash and stock. This merger created a larger solutions provider with an anticipated annual revenue of over $900 million, serving customers in more than 140 countries.
