Echograph
Mobile application for creating photo-video hybrid animations.
Echograph was an iOS application that enabled users to create animations by blending static images with video elements, a format often referred to as a cinemagraph or an animated GIF. Developed by Nick Alt of Clear-Media, the app allowed users to select a video clip, choose a still frame, and then "paint" areas of motion onto the static image. The app initially launched as a paid application for the iPad, costing $2.99, and later expanded to the iPhone and iPod Touch.
The application gained significant traction, being named an iTunes App Store Editor's Choice in over 140 countries. In February 2013, the video-sharing platform Vimeo acquired Echograph for an undisclosed amount. Following the acquisition, the app was made available for free. As part of the deal, Echograph's creator, Nick Alt, transitioned from his role as CEO of Clear-Media to become Vimeo's Vice President of Mobile, tasked with leading the development of their mobile applications. The acquisition was seen as a strategic move by Vimeo to enter the short-form video space, competing with platforms like Twitter's Vine.
