Dubsmash was a video-sharing social media service that allowed users to create short, lip-synced videos to audio clips from songs, movies, and other popular soundbites. The company was founded in Berlin, Germany, in November 2014 by Jonas Drüppel, Roland Grenke, and Daniel Taschik. The trio, who met at a hackathon in Berlin, had previously developed other less successful apps, including a more complex music video creation tool called Starlize. The experience with Starlize taught them the importance of simplicity, leading to Dubsmash's user-friendly interface that required only a few clicks to create a video.
Drüppel and Grenke had business backgrounds, while Taschik was a software engineer, creating a balanced founding team. The app achieved rapid success, reaching the number one spot in Germany within a week of its launch and subsequently topping the charts in over 29 other countries. By June 2015, it had been downloaded over 50 million times across 192 countries, gaining traction with celebrities like Rihanna and Jimmy Fallon, which further boosted its popularity. In 2016, the company relocated from Germany to Brooklyn, New York, to better target American teenagers and focus on a user base that was notably diverse. At the time of its acquisition, Reddit reported that 25% of all Black teens in the U.S. were on the platform, and 70% of its users were female.
Dubsmash operated as a free-to-use mobile application on iOS and Android. The platform's business model was not centered on revenue generation for much of its life; instead, it focused on user growth and engagement, supported by over $20 million in venture capital funding. The service allowed users to upload their own audio, record videos, and share them on the platform and other social networks. Customization features included color filters and video trimming. A significant event in the company's history was a data breach in February 2019, which compromised over 162 million accounts. On December 13, 2020, Reddit announced its acquisition of Dubsmash to integrate its video creation tools into the Reddit platform. Following this integration, the standalone Dubsmash app was officially shut down on February 22, 2022, and the website now redirects to Reddit.
