Doculayer.ai operated as an intelligent content platform specializing in the processing and management of unstructured information. The Dutch company was founded as Onior Group B.V. in 2007 by Richard Smit, who served as CTO. The firm developed a platform that utilized artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze, enhance, and improve the findability of large volumes of data, such as scanned documents, images, emails, and chats.
The company's core business focused on helping enterprises automate labor-intensive manual tasks associated with document processing. The platform could automatically classify documents, extract key data points, and manage content in compliance with privacy legislation like GDPR. This addressed the challenge many organizations face with data being trapped in unstructured formats. Doculayer's technology was designed to integrate with existing business applications and IT systems, including Content Services Platforms, Business Process Management systems, and RPA solutions. The platform offered features like Optical Character Recognition (OCR) with a Post-OCR solution for improved accuracy, metadata extraction, document classification, and workflow automation. It supported flexible deployment models, including private, public, and hybrid cloud environments. The client base included large organizations such as the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security, KPN, and Ahold Delhaize, processing over 500 million documents for major brands.
In June 2019, Doculayer.ai secured €3 million in a Series A funding round from investors Disruptive Technology Ventures and InnovationQuarter to expand its R&D, sales, and marketing teams. A significant milestone occurred in September 2022 when the Amsterdam-based company was acquired by ProcessMaker, a US-based low-code business process management (BPM) platform. The acquisition aimed to integrate Doculayer's Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) capabilities into ProcessMaker's low-code automation platform, enhancing its ability to handle complex processes involving unstructured data for its enterprise clients in sectors like banking, higher education, and manufacturing.
